About This Item
Full Description
The International Code for Fire Safety Systems (FSS Code) was adopted by the Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) at its seventy-third session (December 2000) by resolution MSC.98(73) in order to provide international standards for the fire safety systems and equipment required by chapter II-2 of the 1974 SOLAS Convention. The Code is made mandatory under SOLAS by amendments to the Convention adopted by the MSC at the same session (resolution MSC.99(73)) and entered into force on 1 July 2002. The MSC adopted amendments tochapters 4, 5, 6, 7 and 9 of the Code by resolutions MSC.206(81) and MSC.217(82).
This publication presents engineering specifications for fire safety equipment and systems required by SOLAS chapter II-2 concerning:
- international shore connections
- personnel protection
- fire extinguishers
- fixed gas fire-extinguishing systems
- fixed foam fire-extinguishing systems
- fixed pressure water-spraying and water-mist fire-extinguishing systems
- automatic sprinkler, fire detection and fire alarm systems
- fixed fire detection and fire alarm systems
- sample extraction smoke detection systems
- low-location lighting systems
- fixed emergency fire pumps
- arrangement of means of escape
- fixed deck foam systems
- inert gas systems
- fixed hydrocarbon gas detection systems.

The FSS Code or International Code for Fire Safety Systems is a set of international treaties organised by the International Maritime Organization under the SOLAS Convention that are designed to reduce the risk of fire, and aid in emergency response aboard ships.[1] Some of the components of the code were constructed after some high-profile passenger ship disasters over the last century.
MS Scandinavian Star (after the fire that killed 159 passengers). The disaster led to revisions of the FSS Code
Components[edit]
The FSS Code covers:[2]
- International shore connection - specifics on how to connect to shores and ports (to refill, and to fight fires while docked).
- Personal protection - Fire fighting apparel and breathing apparatus.
- Extinguishing:
- Fire Extinguishers - Specification of portables extinguishers
- Fixed gas fire extinguishing systems
- Fixed foam fire extinguishing systems
- Fixed pressure water and water spraying systems
- Auto sprinkler, fire detection and fire alarm systems
- Fixed Emergency fire pumps
- Fixed deck foam system
- Inert gas system
- Fire detection and alarm systems
- Sample extraction smoke detection system
- Low Location Lighting system - for the lower parts of the ship
- Means of Escape
History[edit]
The FSS Code has been through some evolution:[3]
